Riella Awarded AST Basic Science Career Development Award

Leonardo Riella, MD, PhD, of the Renal Division, recently earned the American Transplant Society's (AST) Basic Science Career Development Award for his contributions to the field of transplantation.

The AST Basic Science Career Development Award is given to an investigator who is within the first seven years of his or her initial appointment as an assistant professor. Those who receive the award must show contributions to the field of transplantation and the promise of making continued significant contributions in the future. The AST is an organization dedicated to improving patient care by advancing research, education, advocacy and organ donation, and advancing the field of organ transplantation. 

Currently, Riella's research interests involve the development of new diagnostic tests that detect earlier graft dysfunction and rejection, the development of new drugs to aid in transplant tolerance and the use of novel blood tests that allow researchers to measure the immune system function.
