Stanton K. Shernan, MD

Stanton K. Shernan, MD, of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, received the Arthur E. Weyman Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) for his exceptional work with echocardiography. This award was sponsored by the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE).

This award recognizes physicians who have demonstrated sustained excellence in echocardiography or cardiovascular ultrasound, and whose careers have promoted and improved the field of perioperative echocardiography. This award is also named after Arthur E. Weyman, MD, FASE, who was the first president of the NBE.

Shernan’s clinical and research interests include the etiology and management of perioperative systemic inflammation, myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury in cardiac surgical patients, and the role of perioperative echocardiography in clinical and surgical decision-making.

The SCA is an international organization of health care professionals committed to excellence and leadership in providing excellent cardiovascular and thoracic patient care through education and research.

The NBE is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1996 to develop and administer examinations in the field of clinical echocardiography, recognize physicians who successfully complete industry exams and certificates, and develop a certification process that publicly recognizes physicians who have completed an approved training program in echocardiography.
