Farokhzad Elected as National Academy of Inventors Fellow

Omid Farokhzad, MD, a physician-scientist in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and founding director of the Center for Nanomedicine, was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in recognition of his pioneering work in nanotechnologies for medical applications.

NAI fellows are selected for having demonstrated “a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society.”

Farokhzad has authored more than 175 papers and is an inventor of more than 200 issued or pending patents worldwide. Among the technologies he has helped develop are a new class of targeted nanoparticles for treating cancer and cardiovascular disease.

With 1,060 NAI Fellows who hold more then 36,000 issued U.S. patents, National Academy of Inventors was founded in 2010 to recognize and encourage inventors from universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes; enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation; encourage the disclosure of intellectual property; educate and mentor innovative students; and translate the inventions of its members to benefit society.
