Philip Named SUNY Upstate Medical University 2023 Distinguished Alumnus

James H. Philip, MD, MEE, of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, was named SUNY Upstate Medical University’s 2023 Distinguished Alumnus for his lasting impact on operating room safety through innovation in medical technology. 

Established in 1966, the Distinguished Alumnus Award recognizes the extraordinary achievements and outstanding service of individual alumni who graduated more than 20 years ago. The award is given by the Upstate Medical Alumni Foundation.  

Philip is an innovator and medical products inventor who has created tools such as Lifewatch, the first clinically successful CO2 monitor for safety, and Gas Man, a computer simulation tool for teaching, simulating and experimenting with anesthesia uptake and distribution. In addition, Philip is a professor at Harvard Medical School and a founding member of the Society for Technology in Anesthesia.  

Located in Syracuse, N.Y., SUNY Upstate Medical University is the only academic medical center in Central New York. It is also the region's largest employer with 9,460 employees.
