Thank you for your interest in the Brigham and Women's Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program. We are truly proud of the fellowship experience we offer at our institution. At the core of our program is our commitment to the highest quality care of critically ill patients in an environment that is both intellectually stimulating and characterized by collegiality and mutual support.

Fellows are taught and supervised by a diverse multidisciplinary faculty, consisting of members of the departments of Anesthesiology, (18), Surgery (10), Emergency Medicine (3), and Pulmonary Medicine (4). Brigham and Women’s is located immediately adjacent to Harvard Medical School, the Countway Medical Library, the Harvard School of Public Health, and The Children's Hospital of Boston, offering a truly comprehensive array of resources and academic activities.

Fellows are exposed to an unmatched diversity of clinical cases as well as outstanding research and public service opportunities. We seek to nurture all the talents of our fellows throughout their training so that they will not only be superbly trained to practice in the highest acuity settings but will go on to become leaders in the field and achieve their highest potential as clinicians, teachers, and researchers.

Overview

The mission of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is to provide cutting-edge evidence-based care to critically ill patients, to advance knowledge through biomedical research and to educate future leaders in critical care.

The one year Critical Care Medicine Fellowship focuses on direct patient care. The fellows spend a minimum of nine months caring for ICU patients while supervising residents and medical students, under the direct supervision of a Critical Care attending.

Curriculum

By taking advantage of our unique interdisciplinary faculty model, we have designed a fellowship to allow trainees to develop advanced proficiency in the management of critically ill patients and develop skills necessary to supervise critical care units.

The Curriculum includes:

• Weekly SICU lecture series by faculty
• Monthly SICU Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conferences prepared by fellows
• Monthly MICU/SICU conference prepared by fellows
• Weekly ultrasound sessions
• Monthly Journal Club
• Weekly departmental Grand Rounds and teaching conferences

FAQs

Q. What are the annual salary and benefits like?
A. The starting salary for a PGY-5 in 2022 is $86,500. Employment benefits include health, dental, disability and other insurance. For more information please refer to FREIDA and the Mass General Brigham Office of Resources for Trainees.

Q. Can you give me some information about trainee contracts?
A. Please refer to the Trainee Contract section of our website.

Q: Do you offer an education allowance?
A. Yes, we do offer an education allowance of $2,000.

Q: Do you sponsor Visas? 
A. At this time, our institution sponsors both H1b and J1 Visas.

Q. Is moonlighting available?
A. Moonlighting is available within the Mass General Brigham System to residents at the CA-2 level of training or higher. Fellows need permission from the Program Director and must have obtained a full medical license, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR) and Federal DEA numbers. Moonlighting Fellows cannot be on a J1 Visa.

Fellowship Application

Selection to the fellowship is highly competitive. Only completed applications are reviewed.

SF Match

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital Critical Care Medicine Fellowship participates in the SF Match. The applicant registration opening date for the 2024-2025 academic year is November 8^th, 2023. Letters of recommendation should be submitted to the SF Match.

Application Deadline

The deadline for completed applications is Wednesday, February 7^th, 2024. Applications are reviewed and interviews are conducted 12 to 18 months prior to the start date of the fellowship. Decisions are typically finalized by July 1 of the year prior to beginning the fellowship.

*A note to applicants interested in a two year combined fellowship in Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia: You will need to check the box on the application indicating your interest. You do not need to apply to both programs. Your application for a two-year position will be reviewed by both fellowship committees. A limited number of interviews will be offered to selected applicants. If you are offered an interview for a two-year position, you will be informed of the interview committee’s decision during the month of April, before either fellowship’s match.

The Match results will be announced on May 28^th, 2024.
