Managing Pain

Chronic, or ongoing, pain is a complicated disorder involving multiple body systems. Even when there is a known cause for chronic pain, there often is no cure. There are, however, treatments that can reduce pain and techniques that can help a person cope with their pain.

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital offers a variety of interventions and therapies for the myriad conditions that can cause pain. These interventions range from simple procedures such as trigger point injections to fluoroscopically guided procedures such as facet injections or lumbar sympathetic blocks.

Through injections, pharmacologic management, psychological methods and physical therapy, we are equipped to successfully treat the vast majority of our patients. Patients who do not get satisfactory relief with currently accepted regimens might be candidates for clinical trials with newer agents.
