Clinical Trials

Brigham and Women's Hospital currently offers several endoscopic weight loss and diabetes procedures that are under clinical investigation.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (MERIT Trial)
Ongoing (closed for recruitment)

EndoBarrier (STEP-1)
Endobarrier is an endoscopic device to treat diabetes and obesity. A liner is endoscopically placed in the first part of your small bowel for 12 months. This procedure is done through the mouth without any incisions.

If you meet the following criteria, you may qualify for the trial:

  • Age 30-65
  • BMI 30-50 kg/m2
  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Hemoglobin A1c 8-10%
  • Have been on at least 3 diabetes medications
  • Not on insulin

Duodenal Mucosal Resurfacing (Safety & Effectiveness of DMR Using the Revita)
The DMR system is an endoscopic device that treats diabetes with less of an effect on weight. The procedure involves heat resurfacing of the duodenum (first part of the small bowel) and does not require an implant.

If you meet the following criteria, you may qualify for the trial:

  • Age 28-65
  • BMI 28-40 kg/m2
  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Hemoglobin A1c 7.5-9.5%
  • Have been on at least 2 diabetes medications
  • Not on insulin or other injectable diabetes medications
