International Fellowship

Our International Fellowships are tuition-based educational programs at Mass General Brigham Enterprise Emergency Medicine.

The International Fellowships provide healthcare scholars from around the world with the opportunity to develop specialty knowledge. Fellows complete the program prepared to serve and lead in their own local healthcare ecosystems. The program is designed for fellows outside of the US. We have multiple tracks in the International Fellowship.

The STRATUS International Fellowship in Clinical Simulation has a broad focus that allows scholars to gain an understanding of the various components of simulation and medical education. Core topic areas include adult learning theory, curriculum development, debriefing in simulation education, technical skills training, business models for simulation funding, simulation center design, center operations, formative and summative assessment, and research in simulation. Fellows also have time to work with faculty on specific areas of interest.

The International Fellowship in Emergency Department Leadership and Administration is designed to teach the skills necessary to lead and manage successful emergency departments through didactic sessions, experience-based learning, and focused interaction with senior mentors. The fellowship takes place in Boston, MA, USA and is designed primarily for physicians from outside of North America who currently hold or are interested in holding a leadership role in an Emergency Department. Participation in the fellowship offers the education and training needed in order to accelerate career trajectory.

The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship trains colleagues around the world in all facets of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). The training program has four primary components: Education, Leadership, Research, and Innovation. To provide the optimal experience, the fellowship leverages the breadth and scope of educational opportunities within MGB to meet the fellow’s goals. International fellows leave the program with the skills needed to be ultrasound leaders at their institutions.

The Disaster Medicine and Healthcare Emergency Management track is designed to give physicians the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue careers and leadership roles in disaster medicine. Fellows learn to create and grow evidence-based emergency management programs that promote readiness and effective and equitable response to the broadest range of emergencies in communities.

The Critical Care track exposes fellows to the cognitive knowledge, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and practical experiences required for critical care medicine. Trainee experiences will be focused on educational trainings and the development of quality improvement initiatives. This program will provide fellows with exposure to the clinical skills and research skills needed to ultimately advance the practice of emergency medicine and critical care medicine in their local healthcare systems.

Program Objective

The overarching goal of the International Fellowships is to prepare healthcare professionals to serve and lead in their own local healthcare ecosystems. The program is intended for fellows outside of the US.

Scholars return to their local healthcare systems equipped to share their knowledge with their colleagues and improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery at their hospital.

  • Cover letter describing your motivations for wanting to become an International Fellow
  • Transcripts from medical school and residency or equivalent

Tuition

This program is tuition-based. Fellows are responsible for obtaining their own funding. Most of our fellows have the program paid for by their institution or government as an investment in the future of simulation in their healthcare system. Unfortunately, we do not have scholarships available to support this training.

Afaf Alblooshi, PhD, MMSc-Med Ed, Mbb.ch

Country: United Arab Emirates
Program: Simulation

Dr. Afaf Sulaiman Alblooshi is a physician with expertise in Pediatric Respiratory Diseases and Medical Education. Dr Alblooshi completed her MD in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2005. In her postgraduate studies at the University of Western Australia, she obtained a graduate certificate in Pediatric Respiratory Sciences in 2010 and a PhD in the field of Pediatric Respiratory Diseases in 2013. Dr. Alblooshi completed a Masters in Medical Education at Harvard Medical School in 2022.

Dr Alblooshi worked as a physician at the UAE Ministry of Health and as an educator and clinical researcher at the UAE University at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her research interests range from medical education to childhood health issues including under- and overweight children, childhood obesity, and childhood asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Faten Abdullah AlRadini, SBFM, MedEd, MD

Country: Saudi Arabia
Program: Simulation

Dr. Faten Abdullah AlRadini is a senior healthcare professional with over 15 years of experience in the healthcare and education sectors. She is a passionate executive and has over 10 years of experience in leadership in Medical Education.

Dr. AlRadini is a consultant for Family Medicine and Medical Education. She works as an Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Faten is qualified with the Saudi and Arab board of Family medicine. She has a master’s degree in medical education from Durham University School of Medicine (UK).

Dr. AlRadini’s home institution, PNU, has one of the largest simulation centers in the Middle East. Her goal is to transfer her unique simulation experience at STRATUS in simulation-based education, operations, research, business models, quality management, and leadership success stories to the PNU Simulation Center.

Abdullah Altaweel,
MbChB, KBEM

Country: Kuwait
Program: Emergency Ultrasound

Abdullah Altaweel, MD was born and raised in Kuwait. He obtained his medical degree from Aberdeen University, Scotland. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency from the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specializations (KIMS), and soon after was appointed Assistant Director of the emergency medicine residency program and Head of the Emergency Department at Adan Hospital, Kuwait.

Dr. Altaweel completed the STRATUS International Fellowship in Clinical Simulation in 2022 and is currently pursuing a second international research fellowship in emergency medicine ultrasound.

Ahmed El Fiki,
MD

Country: Egypt
Program: Emergency Department Leadership and Administration

Dr. El Fiki obtained his medical degree from Cairo University in 2002. He is a full Professor of Neurosurgery at Cairo University School of Medicine, Egypt. Dr. El Fiki served as the Director of the Neurotrauma Unit from 2016-2019 and later the CEO of Cairo University Emergency Hospital, a 500 bed capacity facility.

Dr. El Fiki successfully led the grand opening and operation of the Emergency Department after renovation from 700 square meters to 7,000 square meters, increasing patient capacity to almost 290,000 patients per year.

During the international fellowship, Dr. El Fiki aims to grow his leadership skills so he can strengthen the emergency medical service system and hospital management in Egypt. He hopes to collaborate internationally with organizations and countries with the same interests.
