Brigham and Women’s Harbor Medical Associates follows approximately 1,000 pacemaker and ICD (intracardiac device) patients.

The follow-up of a pacemaker patient begins immediately after implantation of the device and extends throughout the life of the patient. Patients come to the Clinic once or twice a year depending on the type of pacemaker.

During the clinic visit, the Pacemaker Nurse can obtain much information about the pacemaker by connecting the patient to a programmer. This lets us know the condition of the batteries and the wires to the heart.

Many patients have Rate Responsive pacemakers, which allow the heart rate to react according to what the patient is doing, i.e. running, exercising or sleeping. During the Clinic visit, the nurse assesses the patient's symptoms and programs the pacemaker to achieve both maximal pacer longevity and feelings of well being in the patient.

Pacemakers are also checked by phone. Patients are given a transmitter on the first Clinic visit. The patient connects him or herself to the transmitter and the nurse can assess whether the pacemaker is working properly.

The goal of the Pacemaker Clinic is to optimize the functioning and longevity of the patient's pacemaker system in the face of constantly changing patient needs, whether due to changes in lifestyle, medical circumstances or cardiac function.
