Brigham and Women’s Harbor Medical Associates – Sleep Center

The Sleep Lab operates from Sunday through Friday night, and patients will now have a solution to sleep related problems that affect so many areas of their health. The sleep suites allow patients to enjoy all the comforts and amenities of home and have TVs, luxurious queen-sized beds, and plush sleeper-recliners. Patients can get comfortable, and with minimal intrusion from electronic wiring, can receive a full sleep study recorded with discreet tilt and zoom cameras and analyzed by the latest computer technology. One night’s study can pinpoint which of the more than 80 sleep disorders is keeping the patient from getting a good night’s sleep.

In addition to snoring, many people with sleep apnea wake up feeling tired and suffer from fatigue or difficulty concentrating throughout the day. Some fall asleep while driving, in meetings, or even while having conversations with other people because they are so deprived of sleep.

Treatment for sleep apnea is done without medications and most often includes prescribing continuous positive airway pressure, or nasal C-PAP. The patient wears a mask covering the nose while he or she sleeps, and pressure from an air blower forces air through the nasal passages. The air pressure is adjusted so that it is just enough to prevent the throat from collapsing during sleep. This is covered by most insurance plans.
