Rehabilitation after Heart Disease, Intervention and Surgery

Cardiac rehabilitation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is an outpatient, medically supervised lifestyle and exercise program for patients who have cardiovascular disease or are recovering from heart surgery or a cardiac procedure. Our multidisciplinary team —cardiologists, cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists, physical therapists and registered dietitians—designs personalized care plans for each patient.

Cardiac rehabilitation is offered at two convenient locations: Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain and Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center in Foxborough. Our program is dedicated to helping patients take control of their heart health through education, exercise training, emotional support and lifestyle changes, including diet and stress management.

Certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), the BWH cardiac rehabilitation program provides patients with the skills and confidence to live healthier and more active lives, while lowering their risk of heart disease and stroke. Studies have shown that patients who participate in cardiac rehabilitation live longer, with a better quality of life, than those who do not. Sessions are held once-twice weekly for 10-11 weeks and are designed to achieve exercise, behavioral and educational goals. Most insurance plans cover the costs of the program.
