Specialists in vascular medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart & Vascular Center provide advanced diagnosis, treatment and prevention approaches for diseases of the vascular or circulatory system. The circulatory system includes the arteries, veins and lymphatics.
Board-certified vascular medicine cardiologists at the Brigham are highly-trained and experienced. We treat thousands of patients each year with common diseases and complex conditions of the vascular system, such as peripheral artery disease and deep vein thrombosis, as well as rare arterial, venous or lymphatic diseases, such as vasculitis and lymphedema. As an academic medical center and teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, the Brigham’s vascular medicine specialists train the next generation of experts in caring for these diseases.
With a long history of research, our vascular medicine specialists have access to state-of-the-art treatments and clinical trials to provide innovative care for a wide variety of vascular diseases.
Using the Heart & Vascular Center’s signature multidisciplinary approach, vascular medicine specialists work closely with clinicians and surgeons from cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, interventional cardiology, oncology, rheumatology, pulmonary and critical care medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology and more. Our patients receive the benefit of a team of experts working together to provide comprehensive, advanced care tailored for their individual needs. This integrated care is delivered within the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center, a state-of-the-art cardiovascular facility with the full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services beneath one roof.
Our vascular medicine team’s leadership role on rapid response teams for pulmonary embolism and acute aortic syndromes demonstrates our commitment to multidisciplinary care. We also maintain a clinical, research and teaching interest in women’s cardiovascular health.
The vascular medicine team works closely with specialists in the prevention of heart and vascular disease who identify and treat patients with vascular disorders that contribute to atherosclerosis, or a build-up of cholesterol within the arteries. We also collaborate with the cardiovascular genetics team to provide a comprehensive approach to vascular disease as it impacts the patient and family members.
The Brigham’s vascular medicine team is committed to a holistic approach to the care of vascular disease which ensures care for a patient’s physical, mental, spiritual and social needs. Our specialists have strong relationships with Brigham physical therapists, nutritionists, counselors, disease-specific support groups and wellness programs. An emphasis on lifestyle as a key component to vascular health leverages programs focusing on smoking cessation, exercise and more.
