Palliative Care for Lung Disease

Palliative care is multidisciplinary medical care for patients with chronic diseases and critical illnesses, including advanced lung disease. Palliative care fosters better quality of life for patients and families. It relieves patient suffering by controlling symptoms and helps make medical treatments more tolerable. Unlike hospice care which focuses on comfort at the end of life, palliative care can be implemented throughout all stages of disease.

Palliative care services at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Lung Center are beneficial for patients with chronic lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary hypertension.

It also provides support and peace of mind to patients with cancer such as lung cancer. Our palliative care team incorporates the skills of a thoracic surgeon, pulmonologist, nurse practitioner, social worker, clergy and a case manager. The team helps patients manage symptoms and side-effects and guides patients and families as they make difficult decisions about care.
