Smoking Cessation Program

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including nearly 42,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure.

The Smoking Cessation Program at The Lung Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is an eight-week, interactive program with a support-group setting led by BWH clinicians. Sessions feature lectures, skill practices and counseling to help participants stop smoking for good.

Participants will meet with the Brigham's tobacco treatment team in a small, supportive group environment, and will receive tips from ex-smokers who have successfully remained smoke-free.

Session topics include:

  • Week 1: Benefits of quitting
  • Week 2: Developing a plan to quit
  • Week 3: Addiction and coping strategies
  • Week 4: Dealing with withdrawal symptoms; panel of ex-smokers
  • Week 5: Healthy habits: exercise and diet
  • Week 6: Stress management: creating a plan to stay strong
  • Week 7: Relapse prevention
  • Week 8: Secondhand smoke, and personal reflections about the program

Sessions are held each Tuesday from 6-7pm.
