Advanced Practice Nurses

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) are nurses with post-graduate education who have expert knowledge, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies. They engage in advanced assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral and consultation. To be recognized as expert healthcare providers and ensure the highest quality of care, APRNs undergo rigorous national certification, periodic peer review and professional practice evaluations and adhere to a code of ethics.

We’re proud to have more than 200 APRNs as part of our Brigham community. Our APRNs include nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse midwives and psychiatric clinical nurse specialists. APRNs at the Brigham work across the care continuum, from inpatient critical care to outpatient primary care.

BWH APRN Council

As part of the Department of Nursing’s shared governance structure, the Advanced Practice Nursing Council serves as a cohesive voice for all APRNs at the Brigham. The council’s goal is to provide support and opportunities that allow APRNs to exemplify the Brigham’s values: We Care; We Create Breakthroughs, We’re Stronger Together; and We Pursue Excellence.

The committee focuses on opportunities to enhance visibility of the BWH Advanced Practice Nurse role, facilitate communication among APRNs for broad organizational engagement, improve external political involvement, promote connection of APRNs to local professional organizations, and collaborate with senior nursing leaders on strategic planning and advancement of the APRN role.

The APRN council holds quarterly, APRN-led continuing education opportunities, dedicated APRN orientations, and ongoing mentorship opportunities through the Brigham Mentor platform, Mentorlead.
