The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is dedicated to the education of clinical trainees at all levels. For trainees who are enrolled in training programs outside of BWH, short-term rotations are available. This rotation provides an intensive exposure to all areas of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. The rotation is primarily focused on inpatient endocrinology consults.
Trainees participate in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of a broad variety of patients, including work-up, background reading and presentation/discussion of cases at teaching rounds. Trainees also have the opportunity to participate in outpatient clinics; this is individualized based on the trainees interests. Finally, trainees participate in all of the Division's conferences, as outlined in the fellowship page, and for rotations of 4 weeks of longer, are expected to present at the Division’s Clinical Case Conference.
Evidence-based medicine is the expected standard for the student's learning related to the cases evaluated and discussed in teaching rounds and clinics. Students are expected to perform literature searches to identify original articles, review articles and meta-analyses related to their case load, read relevant sections of endocrinology textbooks and utilize electronic resources, such as Up-to-Date, as appropriate. Basic science, as it is relevant to the team's consultations and to clinic patients, is an integral component of the student's reading, principally in textbooks, and is also presented as part of teaching rounds and/or in clinics by attendings and fellows.
Medical Students
Medical student rotations in the Division are organized by Harvard Medical School (HMS). Please visit the HMS Exchange Clerkship program to learn more and to apply. Please be aware that HMS requests payment of tuition for most medical students. The division cannot schedule rotations outside of the HMS Exchange Clerkship Program, but we would be happy to answer any questions regarding the structure of the rotation.
Residents and Fellows
Residents and fellows in US/Canadian training programs are eligible to participate in the Division's endocrine elective. Preference is given to BWH residents, but there is typically availability for outside rotators for many months of the year. Rotators need to be eligible for a Massachusetts Limited License and the trainee’s home institution needs to extend malpractice insurance for the time spent at BWH.
Residents/fellows in training programs outside of the US/Canada are not eligible for this elective due to issues around licensing/credentialing and malpractice insurance.
Physicians not Enrolled in a Training Program
The Division does not offer any rotations, such as observerships or other clinical experiences, for physicians who are not currently enrolled in a US/Canadian graduate medical training program. We recommend that such physicians search for appropriate experiences through other sources, such as the American Medical Association.
