A Commitment to the Health, Education and Research Benefiting the World’s Poor

The Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE) was established at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in 2001 under Drs. Paul Farmer, Jim Kim and Howard Hiatt. DGHE builds on BWH's mission:

  • Engaging in rigorous research to safe lives and break cycles of poverty
  • Training the next generation of global health leaders
  • Improving care where it is needed most

BWH established this pioneering effort to prevent millions of senseless deaths from treatable, avoidable diseases. In creating DGHE, BWH affirmed the right of all patients – wherever they are – to the best in modern medicine. A cadre of committed faculty and trainees make this work possible.

Launching careers that will change the world, building bridges to autonomy

The spectrum of global health includes clinical care, research, system strengthening, and policy. Early-career physicians in DGHE benefit from the chance to forge their own paths, build on their talents, and follow their dreams. Donor support allows physicians beginning their careers to explore how they can make the greatest impact and launch from training most meaningfully.

For mid-career faculty, donor support provides flexibility and freedom to pursue opportunities in a career in global health, allowing them to anchor themselves in their field, build on strong foundations and grow into independent change-makers in global health research, care, and policy.

Essential training in global health

The Doris and Howard Hiatt Residency in Global Health Equity and Internal Medicine selects visionary BWH medicine interns who are committed to a systems approach to improving health care and health systems globally. Residents enter a comprehensive three-year program that includes training in internal medicine; coursework in research methods, public policy and global health advocacy; and research and patient care experiences in resource limited settings globally. Residents earn Masters' through the Harvard Chan School of Public Health as a critical component of their residency. Established in 2004, more than 40 DGHE Residency alumni are now leaders in health system strengthening globally. Each resident's education is funded exclusively by donor support.
