Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital have collaborated to develop a combined Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program that offers unparalleled opportunities for clinical and research training in infectious diseases in conjunction with the Harvard Medical School (HMS).
Paul E. Sax, MD, is the Brigham site director of the program, which includes 10 fellows each year (five at each hospital). Fellows spend the first year in clinical training and subsequent years in further preparation for a career as a clinician-educator, clinical investigator and/or laboratory investigator. Many members of our division teach fellows about microbiology and infectious diseases as part of the first-year curriculum.
Our division views the training of future clinical leaders and investigators as our most enduring contribution to the field. We are eager to assist in the training of women and minority candidates. Please visit our program website for more details.
Each resident works with an infectious diseases fellow and attending physician. During morning rounds, the resident and fellow evaluate and provide continuing care for inpatients for whom consultative services are requested. During afternoon daily rounds, residents present the cases they have worked up to the attending physician. Further learning about infectious diseases and the role of a consultant is then accomplished with the attending physician at the bedside during afternoon follow-up rounds.
Residents perform about one consultation per day. In addition, they are expected to attend four weekly infectious diseases conferences, including a clinical case-management conference on Monday mornings, an HIV-focused conference at lunch time on Mondays and a case-based clinical and research conference on Wednesday mornings. Residents also attend a weekly teaching session in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

Our division offers two courses for medical students: Clinical Infectious Disease and Microbiology (ME513M.23) and Clinical Infectious Diseases in the Transplant and Cancer Patient (ME513M.Ja).
The monthly clinical rotation elective at the Brigham is structured around the inpatient consultation services that our division provides. Each student works directly with both an infectious diseases fellow and a supervising faculty member from the division. Together, they evaluate and provide continuing care for hospitalized patients with diverse problems in clinical infectious diseases. Students present the cases they have worked up to the attending physician on daily rounds and may also present cases of interest during a weekly division-wide case conference. Attendance at the other infection disease-related conferences provides additional learning opportunities. A weekly dedicated meeting with the course director offers the chance to review the principles of antimicrobial therapy, which supplements the teaching that goes on at the bedside and during daily rounds.

This continuing medical education course, offered by the division and HMS, provides physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants with guidance to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. Participants learn the practice implications of important new innovations and ensure their ability to address challenges in infectious diseases is fully current.
