For Infectious Disease Patients and Families

Welcome to the Division of Infectious Diseases. Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. We deliver consultation services to adults with bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic diseases as well as primary care services to patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Our specialists have extensive experience treating patients with complicated infectious diseases, including those who have:

  • HIV
  • Compromised immune systems due to cancer treatment or organ transplant
  • Infections of bones, joints and implants
  • Tropical infectious diseases
  • Surgical site infections

Subspecialty Care

In addition to clinics for general infectious diseases, our division provides subspecialty care in:

  • HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Travel health and tropical medicine vaccinations and consultation
  • Pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (antibiotics used to treat and prevent infection),
  • Transplantation infectious diseases and cancer-related infections (in partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, or DFCI)
  • Infectious diseases of women (in Chestnut Hill)

Clinical and Vaccine Trials

Part of our mission at the Brigham is to advance the knowledge of human diseases, which makes clinical research a vital aspect of our work. Our division is involved in a variety of such activities aimed at developing new therapies for infectious diseases.

As a patient in our practice, you may be invited to take part in a clinical trial designed to improve management of your particular condition. Recent or ongoing studies, for example, have explored treatments for COVID-19, drug-resistant bacterial pathogens, fungi and HIV. We are also active participants in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network.
