Lung and airway problems impair respiratory function and can make breathing difficult. These conditions have several different causes: an underlying disease, injury or infection or they may be a side effect of cancer treatment.
The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) provides expert diagnostic and treatment services for all lung and airway conditions. In addition to expert care from our board-certified pulmonologists, patients benefit from the wide network of specialized knowledge and advanced research conducted here. Our pulmonologists—faculty members at Harvard Medical School—work closely with BWH specialists and researchers, offering seamless, integrated patient care.
Our distinguishing approaches include minimally-invasive lung volume reduction for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial thermoplasty for severe asthma, state-of-the-art care for LAM, advanced cardiopulmonary exercise testing to determine dyspnea causes, new medical treatment for patients with interstitial lung disease, and multidisciplinary options for the evaluation and management of lung nodules.
Many of our patients choose to participate in translational clinical research, enabling significant advances in our understanding of the origins of lung disease and in our development of new therapies. Investigators in The Lung Research Center, leaders in lung research and innovation, have one of the largest research portfolios in the nation supported by the National Institute of Health. They are bringing these exciting new advances in clinical care to our patients.
Our pulmonologists are an integral part of the Airway and Breathing Disorders Programs at The Lung Center. Patients who require surgery benefit from combined medical-surgical care through collaboration with the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
Pulmonary and critical care medicine services are provided in the outpatient setting or our state-of-the-art inpatient units at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
