YIP-2 fellows will be paid at the PGY-5 level through one or some combination of the following sources: a) divisional funds from one of the two hospitals; b) research mentor funds; or c) institutional training grant funds.
YIP-3 fellows will be supported at the NIH NRSA research salary scale from one or some combination of the following sources: a) divisional funds from one of the two hospitals; b) research mentor funds; or c) institutional training grant funds. This funding for the third year of fellowship is contingent upon the evaluation of the research mentor indicating that the fellow has made satisfactory progress in YIP-2. Fellows who are deemed not to have made satisfactory research progress will be graduated from the ACGME-accredited portion of the program upon completion of YIP-2.
YIP-4 fellows will be expected to have secured their own independent funding through the NIH, foundations, or societies. As examples, current fellows in the program are being supported from individual NIH F32 awards and grants from the American Kidney Fund and the American Society of Nephrology. Fellows who have demonstrated good research progress but have been unable to secure their own funding may remain in the program for a fourth year provided that the fellow can cover his/her salary through clinical work or their research mentor can fund their salary. The Fellowship Program will work with the fellow to find appropriate clinical activities for those who are interested in funding their salary through clinical work.
