BWH-MGH Joint Renal Grand Rounds

[Course Directors: Gearoid McMahon, MB BCh, Leonardo Riella, MD, PhD, and Andrew Lundquist, MD, PhD]

Renal Grand Rounds is held weekly on Tuesdays as a joint conference between the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, and consists of Case Presentations and Invited Lectures.

Case Presentations of Renal Grand Rounds

Throughout the year, fellows see a variety of interesting, complicated, and diagnostically challenging cases. Each fellow presents a case four times during the year. The cases are then discussed in detail by a faculty member, followed by an interactive discussion. This is a valuable learning experience for both the trainees and the faculty.

Invited Lectures

Lectures are presented by distinguished invited speakers from all over the United States and beyond. These lectures provide an opportunity for members of the division to stay up to date with recent advances in Nephrology, and to interact with leaders in the field. Topics include basic science, clinical research, and health policy.

Renal Clinical Conference

[Course Director: David E. Leaf, MD, MMSc]

Renal Clinical Conference is held weekly on Thursdays and consists of Pathology Conference, Journal Club, and BWH Renal Grand Rounds.

Pathology Conference

This bi-monthly, 90-minute conference is led by our internationally-renowned renal pathologist, Helmut Rennke. Slides from recently biopsied patients are selected based on interesting findings, specific teaching points, and complexities in clinical management. Twice per year, a multidisciplinary pathology conference is held jointly with our hematology/oncology colleagues from Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Journal Club

This interactive, 60-minute conference is held monthly, and is led by a nephrology fellow or faculty member. The speaker selects a recently published manuscript with high relevance to clinical nephrology. The article is critically reviewed, with an emphasis on background, methodology, statistical analysis, and impact on clinical practice.

BWH Renal Grand Rounds

This monthly 60-minute conference is held on the last Thursday of each month. Local and national invited speakers discuss cutting edge clinical research in nephrology.

Clinical Research Conference

[Course Director: Ciaran McMullan, MD, MMSc]

This monthly, interactive, 60-minute conference is held the first Monday of the month, and is led by a renal fellow or junior faculty member involved in clinical research within the division. It is a valuable opportunity to present preliminary data and/or new research ideas to peers, and to receive critical feedback from colleagues including senior faculty members. The emphases of the conference are to provide guidance to developing researchers, to improve presentation skills of the fellows and junior faculty, and to foster collaboration between the clinical researchers within the division.

Renal Fellows Conference

[Course Director: Ernest Mandel, MD, SM]

Renal Fellows Conference is held every Wednesday. This 60-minute didactic lecture, which covers a broad range of topics across clinical nephrology, is led by a faculty member and is geared toward first-year fellows. Modules include core topics such as dialysis, fluids and electrolytes, and transplantation, as well as special interest areas such as quality and safety and geriatric nephrology. Fellow-led sessions based on NephSAP questions are interspersed as well to review topics in a board-style format.

Basic Science Research Seminar

[Course Director: Jing Zhou, MD, PhD]

This 60-minute basic science research seminar is held weekly every Wednesday. Invited speakers from within and outside the Harvard community present on a wide range of research topics, with the goal of updating our knowledge on cutting edge research. Fellows from the Renal Division and the Division of Engineering in Medicine are also invited to present their progress on their latest research projects.
