Anna Greka, MD, received a Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) Award, the highest honor bestowed by the US Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Joseph Bonventre, MD, PhD, was a keynote speaker at the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology Annual Scientific Meeting on October 2, 2016. He was presented with the Chan Woon Cheung Memorial Fund Award, the premier award given by the Society.

Julien Siefter, MD, was honored with the 2016 HMS Special Faculty Prize for Sustained Excellence in Teaching in recognition of his many years of outstanding teaching and educational leadership at Harvard Medical School. He has made many important contributions to the education of Harvard medical students during the more than 25 years he has taught renal physiology and pathophysiology in the New Pathway and in HST. His outstanding contributions to teaching at HMS have launched generations of medical students as confident and well educated physicians.

Joseph Bonventre, MD, PhD, Chief of BWH’s Division of Renal Medicine and a team of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Stem Cell Institute investigators published research involving the creation of human kidney organoids, three-dimensional mini-organs grown in a lab dish, to model human kidney development and to test for drug toxicity. Now, using gene-editing tools, researchers can engineer these mini-kidneys with specific genetic diseases. Harvard Stem Cell Institute researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have combined cutting-edge, gene-editing techniques with stem cell science to for the first time successfully model genetic kidney disease in lab-grown, mini-kidneys. The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

Ryuji Morizane, MD, PhD, Instructor in BWH’s Renal Division and investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) have established a highly efficient method for making kidney structures from stem cells that are derived from skin taken from patients. The kidney structures formed could be used to study abnormalities of kidney development, chronic kidney disease, the effects of toxic drugs, and be incorporated into bioengineered devices to treat patients with acute and chronic kidney injury. In the longer term, these methods could hasten progress toward replacing a damaged or diseased kidney with tissue derived from a patient’s own cells. These results were published in Nature Biotechnology this week. Study co-authors also include BWH Renal Division Faculty members Albert Q. Lam, MD and M. Todd Valerius, PhD.
