Lupus Center

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Lupus Center is a comprehensive center committed to providing state of the art, collaborative care to all patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus or SLE). At the BWH Lupus Center, an experienced team of dedicated rheumatologists and other medical specialists provide expert collaborative clinical care in the diagnosis and treatment lupus and related conditions.

How We Can Help

The BWH Lupus Center is staffed by 14 board-certified rheumatologists who together care for more than 900 lupus patients annually. Our Center uses a cooperative clinical care model with many affiliated BWH medical specialists, including dermatology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, and cardiology, all with specific expertise and interest in lupus, allowing for timely, comprehensive and cutting-edge coordinated care. Our rheumatologists also specialize in the transition of pediatric and youth care to adult care for lupus and related disorders, and care of women with lupus in their family planning and pregnancies.

We ensure rapid access, timely appointments for our patients, and communication with all other care providers.

What Sets Us Apart

The BWH Lupus Center is part of our BWH Lupus Program, an extensive research initiative focusing on advancing the understanding and care of patients with this complex autoimmune illness. Our mission is to care for and improve the lives of people living with lupus and to discover the means for prevention and cure of this complex and often severe autoimmune disease.

Expert rheumatologists Karen Costenbader, MD, and Lara Tarter, MD, discuss the innovative treatments and research at The Lupus Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
