Sleep and Circadian Disorders Services

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders through its Sleep Disorders Service is the only American Academy of Sleep Medicine designated Comprehensive Academic Sleep Program of Distinction in New England for adult patients with sleep disorders.

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of 90 known sleep disorders, including: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, Narcolepsy, Restless Legs Syndrome, and nocturnal seizures and other forms of epilepsy. We provide diagnostic Home Sleep Tests and In-lab Sleep Tests, treatment with CPAP, dental appliances, individual cognitive behavioral therapy and support groups.

The Brigham and Women’s Sleep Disorders Service also has two specialty programs. One has doctors with special expertise in the many Neurologic Complications of Sleep including: movement disorders, behavioral disturbances, epilepsy/seizure and stroke.

As many patients with sleep problems also have issues with their sleep wake schedules, the second specialty clinic is the Circadian Disorders clinic. This clinic has physicians with special expertise in circadian rhythm disorders and offers special diagnostic tests and treatments for these conditions.

The Division provides diagnostic and treatment services for patients with sleep disorders at four convenient clinic locations as well as through virtual visits (video or phone appointment). At Brigham and Women's Hospital, the BWH Sleep Disorders Service provides inpatient consultations for all sleep disorders and limited channel sleep studies for evaluation of sleep disordered breathing. Consultations performed by one of our sleep specialists can be useful for timely diagnosis, early initiation of treatment, and coordination with outpatient sleep services, benefiting patients with known or suspected sleep disorders. In particular, the in-patient setting provides an opportunity for timely intervention for sleep apnea, sleep related hypoventilation syndromes, and Cheyne Stoke Breathing.

Other conditions that may be appropriate for in-patient consultation are: insomnia interfering with inpatient medical management; sleep misalignment (sleep schedule problems) interfering with inpatient medical management, and restless leg syndrome, and others. In coordination with Respiratory Therapy, bedside sleep apnea testing services are available. Requests for inpatient consultations at Brigham and Women’s Hospital can be made by making a request to the responsible sleep specialist using PPD.
