Meet the Global Neurology Program Director

Aaron L. Berkowitz, MD, PhD

As Director of the Global Neurology Program, Aaron L. Berkowitz, MD, PhD has provided neurology education and clinical consultation in Haiti (where there is one neurologist for a population of approximately 10 million) and Malawi (where there is one pediatric neurologist but no adult neurologist for a population of approximately 16 million).

In collaboration with Physicians for Haiti and Partners in Health, he has helped to develop educational materials, clinical protocols, and means for internet consultation for clinicians practicing without access to neurologists. He has taught neurology courses to the family medicine residents at St. Nicholas Hospital in St. Marc, Haiti (Supported by the Ministry of Health of Haiti and Partners in Health), to clinicians at St. Boniface Hospital in Fond-des-Blancs, Haiti (through Physicians for Haiti), to medical students and residents at University of Malawi College of Medicine in Lilongwe, Malawi and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, and to physicians and clinical officers at Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo in Neno, Malawi.

Dr. Berkowitz completed neurology residency at the Harvard Partners Neurology program (Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital) after completing his M.D. at Johns Hopkins and his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He attends on the inpatient neurology service and in the outpatient clinic at Brigham and Women’s and is an Instructor in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He works closely with Physicians for Haiti on educational materials on the diagnosis and management of neurologic disease in resource-limited settings and collaborates with the Mental Health program at Partners in Health. He has published on various topics in neurology and global health in journals such as Neurology, Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, and The Neurohospitalist.
