The Inpatient Child Neurology Service at Boston Children's Hospital handles all non-ICU and consult neurology care at Boston Children’s Hospital. The experience will be broad and offer exposure to a variety of neurologic disorders such as epilepsy, headache, autoimmune and demyelinating diseases, pediatric stroke, as well as genetic and developmental disorders. You will be an active member of the team and will be responsible for direct patient care. You will be learning the pediatric neurologic examination, preparing H&Ps, formulating an assessment and making a diagnostic/therapeutic plan.
- The team consists of an attending, senior child neurology resident, 1-2 junior residents (who may be adult or child neurologists), an NP, and possibly an MS4. The team works on 9NW.
- You will pre-round before attending rounds at 8am. You round again with the attending in the late afternoon. Progress notes are done in PowerChart. You should type a note and email it to the resident covering your patients some time after morning rounds and they will discuss the note with you and insert it in PowerChart.
- Patients are admitted directly or through the ED. When a patient is admitted through the ED, the admission note is written by a neurology resident covering the ED before the patient comes to the team. Therefore, you will have to be proactive and in touch with this resident if you want to be the first person to write a note. Taking call is a great time to do this!
- Call/pager: You should take call Q4 and be in touch with both the resident covering the floor and the resident covering the ED. Ideally, you will write notes on the patients being admitted to your team directly or from the ED. You are encouraged to help the ED resident by writing notes on patients who will not ultimately come to your team. Call ends at 10 pm. You may want to have a resident swipe you into their call rooms or use the bridge and use the call rooms at the BWH if there is down time as there is currently no dedicated call room at BCH for medical students. There is currently no dedicated MS3/4 pager at BCH.
- Other helpful tips: Bring a toy!!! This can be very helpful when examining children. Carry a normal development chart (Google Denver II PDF).
