Neurology Clerkship Program

Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is one of the core teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. About a third of Harvard Medical School’s students conduct their core clinical neurology training at BWH through the Principle clinical experience (PCE). Advanced electives are offered both to interested Harvard Medical students and students at outside institutions.

We think that this is the best neurology rotation a medical student could ever do. The quality of our faculty, clinical care provided, and teaching is exceptional. There is a regular morning report often conducted by the authors of Adams and Victor’s Principles of Neurology, the best-recognized textbook in the field. The rotation is rigorous, with busy clinical services, overnight call, and a didactic component. PCE students are assessed primarily on clinical performance, but shelf scores and a bedside examination are also included. Advanced students are assessed strictly on clinical performance and are held to a higher standard than core students. The course objectives for students are the following:

  1. To develop competence in documenting neurological history and performing an accurate and complete neurology examination
  2. To learn about the clinical presentation and management of common neurological disorders
  3. To become familiar with indicators and rationale for ancillary neurological testing such as neuroimaging and electrodiagnosis
  4. To review and apply basic concepts from neuroanatomy and neuropathology.
