As part of its mission to provide world-class clinical care and further the understanding and treatment of neurological diseases, the Department of Neurology sponsors multidisciplinary research programs spanning the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, Anesthesiology and Medicine.
The efforts and expertise of this multidisciplinary group of physicians and scientists have produced significant contributions to our understanding of neurological disease mechanisms and to the development of new treatments for brain disorders.
A unique interdisciplinary program, the Women's Neurology Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital focuses on gender differences in medical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and care of women with neurologic diseases. We consider how hormonal and reproductive changes throughout a woman's lifespan, including pregnancy and menopause, as well as use of oral contraceptives and assisted reproduction, impact neurological health and disease.
One example of our gender-focused research is the Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory of Sex Differences in the Brain where we address questions of why men and women are at different risks for psychiatric and neurologic disorders. Here, we take a lifespan approach to our research, investigating how changes in hormonal status, such as during fetal development, puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause and menopause impact the brain.
