Moyamoya disease is progressive narrowing of blood vessels in the brain, which results in the formation of fragile collateral vessels. It is a significant cause of stroke and brain hemorrhage in children and young adults. The high stroke risk from moyamoya, however, can be significantly decreased by bypass surgery. In bypass surgery, a blood vessel from the scalp is connected to a vessel on the brain surface in order to augment blood flow to the brain.
