Epilepsy and Seizure Surgery Service

Our neurosurgeons are part of the multidisciplinary Edward B. Bromfield Epilepsy Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The program offers a full range of medical and surgical care for the treatment of epilepsy, a seizure disorder that affects nearly three million people in the United States.

With many new medications on the market, many patients' seizures can be successfully controlled with the right combination of anti-epileptic medications. However, one third of those diagnosed with epilepsy have seizures that cannot be controlled with medication and may qualify as surgical candidates.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our neurosurgeons consult with the psychologists, neurologists and neuropsychologists of the Edward B. Bromfield Epilepsy program to determine if surgery is an appropriate treatment for a patient suffering from epileptic seizures. If surgery is deemed necessary, our neurosurgeons can perform a variety of surgical procedures that may result in control of seizures, including:

The Bromfield Epilepsy Program brings together an outstanding group of specialists from a variety of disciplines who share the goal of eliminating seizures in the safest and most effective way, while elevating quality-of-life for all of our patients.

Our multidisciplinary approach integrates the expertise of the internationally renowned BWH clinical staff and allows for comprehensive, seamless care of our patients. Our team includes dedicated neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, social workers, nurse specialists and electroencephalography (EEG) technologists, all with special training and expertise in epilepsy. The epilepsy team communicates each week to tailor care for each individual patient and maintains close communication with referring physicians. The Edward B. Bromfield Epilepsy Team includes:
