What is the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine?

Over one hundred years ago, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital was erected behind Harvard Medical School so that its curious minds in science and medicine would never be too far from the laboratory bench. The Hale Building for Transformative Medicine (Hale BTM) takes that idea and adapts it for 21st century medicine: bringing our clinicians and scientists together in one building to tackle the toughest topics in healthcare.

This carefully constructed building located on the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) main campus is made of glass and steel, reaching 13 stories above ground and three below. This addition to the campus has undoubtedly enabled our physician-scientists to further their research. These experts are better positioned to unravel the causes of disease so they can provide the comprehensive, compassionate care BWH is known for, while finding cures to some of the greatest threats to human health.

With its innovative construction and state-of-the-art research space and clinic space, the Hale BTM brings together the world's finest clinicians and scientists in the neurosciences, orthopedics and rheumatology fields. The goal of the Hale BTM is to promote collaboration and accelerate advancements in care for patients suffering from neurologic, orthopedic, and rheumatologic conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The new building will be able to provide patients with coordinated care across multiple departments- an experience that will truly benefit the patient.

What’s inside the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine?

Inside Hale BTM is a translational research building housed in the Neurosciences Center and the Orthopaedic & Arthritis Center. The new building brings physicians and scientists together in one building to pioneer medical breakthroughs in the neurosciences, orthopaedics, immunology, arthritis, and allergies and to translate those discoveries to patient care.

The Hale BTM is home to the Neurosciences Center, which offers a multidisciplinary clinic where patients can receive a comprehensive evaluation and consensus opinion from several disciplines at one location. Traditionally, patients would have to visit separate clinics, which previously made coordination of care more difficult. With one Neurosciences Center, patients have a new, coordinated experience with their treatment being led by highly skilled, collaborative teams. Patients are able to meet with top clinicians and specialists regarding the management and treatment of their condition.

In addition to these multidisciplinary centers, the facility also includes the following services and features:

  • Imaging services, including MRI, CT and X-Ray
  • Neuro Procedural Suite for Diagnostics and Treatment, which includes EMG, EEG and TMS
  • Ambulatory Infusion Service
  • The Harvey Cushing Neurosurgical Research Laboratory
  • Neuro-ophthalmology Rooms
  • Neuropsychiatry Testing Rooms
  • 28 Exam Rooms, 16 Consult Rooms and 2 Procedure Rooms
  • A cafe with a full service menu for patients and visitors
  • Parking facility, including valet assist.

Where is the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine/ Neurosciences Center?

Clinics have moved from their locations on the BWH main campus, to a new building on campus located next to the Shapiro Cardiovascular Building, across the street from the main BWH entrance (75 Francis Street). The new entrance’s address is 60 Fenwood Road. The Hale BTM is connected to the BWH campus via a glass-enclosed bridge. Although it is a new building with a new address it is still connected to the BWH campus via bridge and connects you directly to the BWH Hallway referred to as the PIKE.

What are the hours of operation?

On weekdays, the Neurosciences Center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. These times offer you, our patients, greater flexibility and ease when scheduling appointments. We will also have Saturday hours, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (provider/specialty specific). Some specialty services housed in the center will have variable hours, and may be open earlier or later than other services. Please check with your care team and scheduler for specific appointment availability.

How will I find my way around the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine?

To help patients get where they need to go, our friendly staff will greet you when you first arrive, to check you in for your appointment and answer any questions you may have regarding your appointment. Our electronic patient location system will also assist us in ensuring your location during your visit. Click here for a map of the new location.

How does the Patient Location System work?

The Hale BTM is piloting a patient location system which will help care teams easily find patients and each other. This system provides a better staff and patient experience by reducing wait times, and helping us to deliver more personalized care. Patients and staff are asked to wear a tracking device that helps us know their location within the new building. You will receive this device at check-in to wear during your entire visit to the new building. When your care provider is ready to see you, the device will allow one of our staff members to find you and bring you to the appropriate location for your appointment.

This reduces patient wait times by alerting clinic staff if a patient has been waiting too long at any point during the visit. During your visit, you may need to access care at multiple locations within the new building. For example, a patient who visits our Neurosciences Center on the first floor may need additional CT or MRI imaging, which is located on the ground floor. With our patient location system, our care teams can keep an eye on your progress and be ready for you each step of the way.

What about Patient Gateway?

Our patients can use Patient Gateway, a secure online health connection, to:

  • Request or cancel an appointment.
  • See your past and upcoming appointment dates and times.
  • See your test results.
  • Request a prescription refill.
  • See your health information and medical records, including immunization records, allergies and previous visit summaries.
  • Communicate easily with your care team and get your questions answered in a timely manner.
How can I get to the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine?

To simplify your experience, the new building has a dedicated parking garage with a valet assist service. All you have to do is drive into the garage to self-park or if parking is full, utilize the valet assist service inside the garage who will take care of it for you. You can also still self-park at the 80 Francis Street Parking Garage, which is just a short walk away.

Public transportation via MBTA is a convenient way to getting to the hospital. The BTM is just a short walk from the Brigham Circle T stop on the Green Line (E Train). Go to MBTA.com for train schedules and system map.

We will also have a regular shuttle service for patients who need to be transported to other locations on the BWH Campus.
