Family Planning services are offered through the Family Planning Center and the Complex Contraception Clinic.
The Family Planning Center is an outpatient procedural unit that offers the following services:
- First and second trimester abortion care
- Medication abortion (the abortion pill)
- First trimester uterine aspiration
- Second trimester dilation and evacuation
- Includes intravenous (IV) general anesthesia for those who require or prefer it
- Contraceptive counseling and initiation of all reversible birth control methods
- Management of miscarriage, pregnancy loss or abnormal pregnancy
- By uterine aspiration (first trimester) or dilation and evacuation (second trimester)
- Includes intravenous (IV) general anesthesia for those who require or prefer it
- With medications (mifepristone + misoprostol) in the first trimester
- Insertion and removal of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) for women who require anesthesia or ultrasound guidance for these procedures
The Complex Contraception Clinic is located within an office-based practice. We provide contraceptive counseling and offer all approved methods of birth control. The clinic offers same-day contraception initiation, discontinuation, or switching for women whose medical conditions make contraception selection challenging.

Our expert gynecologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, social workers and other supportive staff work together as a team to provide patients with the best clinical care, while also providing emotional support during what is often a challenging time.
In addition to our world-class Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School faculty, our team includes family planning fellows and Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology. We impress upon these future leaders the importance of access to safe family planning services to protect women’s health and lives and to empower women locally and globally.
