Orthopaedic Trauma Services

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) accredited Level I Trauma Center provides expert clinical and surgical care for trauma patients with orthopaedic injuries involving the musculoskeletal system--bones, joints, muscles and tendons, or the spine--following accidents, falls and other severe or life-changing events. We are exceptionally experienced at caring for patients suffering from complex and multiple orthopaedic injuries. For example, at BWH we have specially-designed operating rooms to accommodate patients with complex and multiple injuries.

Patients also benefit from the expertise of a multidisciplinary team that a trauma patient frequently requires, which could include emergency room specialists, medical clinicians, rehabilitation therapists, plastic surgeons, psychiatric experts and others.

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service is staffed by doctors who specialize in injury management. Led by the Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service, the team includes board-certified orthopaedic surgeons with fellowship training in trauma and adult spine surgery. They collaborate with multidisciplinary subspecialists throughout BWH to ensure optimal treatment for patients with multiple medical concerns.

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service is a member of the Harvard Medical School Orthopaedic Trauma Initiative, whose primary purpose is to foster collaboration among the orthopaedic trauma services at the Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals.
