The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is engaged in cutting-edge orthopedic research that involves basic science, clinical investigations and patient outcome studies for many disorders, injuries and treatment procedures involving the spine.

Basic Research on the Spine

James D. Kang, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at BWH, studies the molecular causes of disc degeneration. In collaboration with Shuichi Mizuno, PhD, Dr. Kang is also studying how intervertebral disc cells are affected by mechanical forces, such as physicochemical stress.

Clinical Research on the Spine

  • Dr. Kang’s clinical research focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgery for hip-spine and neck-shoulder syndromes.
  • Jay M. Zampini, MD studies the visualization of spine surgery using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Spine Clinical Outcomes Research Center

Led by Andrew J. Schoenfeld, MD, the BWH Spine Clinical Outcomes Research Center conducts clinical research on spinal metastases, cervical and lumbar spine disorders, and the role of healthcare policy and reform initiatives on the use of orthopaedic and spine interventions. Since 2015, the Spine Clinical Outcomes Research Center has had over 30 manuscripts accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
