Sports Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

The fellowship at Brigham and Women’s/Harvard Medical School ensures a comprehensive education in the art and science of Sports Medicine. We believe the educational opportunity offered by our sports medicine fellowship will provide a firm foundation in the management of sports related musculoskeletal problems and the complexities of a Sports Medicine practice which should assist a graduate to rise to leadership roles within the orthopaedic community.

The sports medicine program is comprehensive and is structured around teaching clinical and psychomotor skills to be proficient in a variety of sports medicine problems involving the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle.

Inpatient surgical cases include complex ligamentous reconstruction for knee dislocation, open surgical reconstruction including Latarjet procedures, total shoulder replacement, tibial and femoral osteotomies, open tendon repairs (patellar, quadriceps, and Achilles), joint preservation techniques including autogenous cartilage implantation, osteochondral grating, mosaicplasty, microfracture, and meniscal transplantation and partial knee replacements.

Outpatient surgical procedures include ACL, PCL reconstruction, meniscal repairs, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder stabilizations, hip arthroscopy including hip labral repair, femoral and acetabular osteoplasty, iliotibial and psoas tendon releases, and elbow arthroscopy.

Teaching Faculty

Didactics

Didactic teaching includes a weekly CORE curriculum with lectures on basic science, clinical and surgical techniques including pertinent outcome studies upon which current surgical practices of sports medicine are based.

  • Quarterly cadaveric arthroscopy labs
  • Weekly BWH/MGH Combined Orthopedics Residency Grand Rounds
  • Harvard Orthopedic Anatomy Core sessions over an eight-week period
  • VirtaMed ArthroS arthroscopy simulator at STRATUS Center

Team Coverage

Several local high schools and Stonehill College offer the opportunity for hands on team coverage of football and ice hockey games. There is training room time with the athletes and interaction with trainers, coaches and physical therapists. There are also opportunities for professional event coverage in the Boston area.

Research

There is ample research time for basic science and clinical projects with support from the Sports Medicine staff, Research Assistants and the BWH Orthopaedic and Arthritis Center for Outcomes research (OrACore) as necessary.

Participation in basic science and clinical research projects will be encouraged throughout the year with instruction on study design and preparation, presentation, and manuscript preparation.

Each fellow is required to complete at least one research project during their fellowship year.

Financial support is provided for presentation of research projects at national meetings.

Requirements

Duration: 1 year (August 1 to July 31)

The applicant must be Board-eligible and obtain a full Massachusetts license.

This fellowship is ACGME accredited.
