Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

The Harvard Medical School Fellowship Program in Transfusion Medicine draws upon the combined resources of all four major Harvard teaching hospitals. The goals of this one-year ACGME accredited training program are:

  • Provide training in all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine, including:
    • Performance and interpretation of immunohematologic testing.
    • Transfusion support for diverse clinical settings.
    • Evaluation and management of transfusion reactions.
    • Blood donation, infectious disease screening, blood component manufacturing.
    • Therapeutic apheresis and peripheral blood stem cell collection.
    • Quality systems and regulatory aspects of transfusion medicine.
    • Cellular therapies.
    • Neonatal and pediatric transfusion medicine.
    • Patient Blood Management concepts and approaches.
  • Provide hands-on research experience in transfusion medicine.
  • Provide experience in teaching students and residents.

Trainees rotate through the transfusion medicine services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Massachusetts General Hospital. An elective rotation at American Red Cross is also available.

Fellows participate in weekly didactic conferences, and conduct focused research projects under the guidance of faculty.

Requirements

Applicants must be Board eligible or certified in pathology, internal medicine, pediatrics, or another appropriate specialty. Applicants must be eligible for Massachusetts medical licensure.
