Pathology Residency Overview and Aims

Overview

We are embarking on a new era in pathology training with the creation of a joint Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) residency training experience. BWH and MGH each have outstanding - but historically separate – pathology training programs, both located in Boston, Massachusetts and affiliated with Harvard Medical School. While the BWH and MGH pathology residencies have operated independently of one another for over 50 years, we are now coming together to provide a joint training experience, beginning in July 2023. Mission Statement

The Departments of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital seek to train the next generation of leaders in diagnostics, education and investigation while providing the highest quality of innovative care. A guiding principle of our joint residency program is flexibility; we provide each resident the opportunity to customize their training experience to support individual interests and career goals. We aim to expand understanding of the mechanisms of human disease and the methods to detect, diagnose, prevent and monitor pathological conditions. We seek to achieve these goals through our health care institutions, serving patients and their communities, locally, nationally and internationally.

Program Aims

  1. Nurture an intellectually stimulating environment in a collegial workplace that supports workforce diversity, trainee well-being, and career development.
  2. Provide highly flexible, cutting-edge, hands-on diagnostic training in pathology and its subspecialties, with an emphasis on direct resident-faculty contact, diverse case exposure, and graduated responsibility.
  3. Ensure graduating residents are clinically excellent independent practitioners of pathology, well prepared for advanced subspecialty clinical fellowship and/or research training.
  4. Promote leadership skills, professional responsibility, patient safety, effective communication, service to the community, and excellence in patient care.
  5. Foster expertise in education and mentorship by providing trainees the opportunity to teach and advise students, peers, allied health professionals, and the global pathology community.
  6. Provide residents with opportunities to engage in high-quality, mentored basic, translational and/or clinical research, including support for extended research experience during or after residency.
