National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month! To celebrate, the Nutrition Department is challenging you to join in on our nutrition scavenger hunt! Each week in March will have a different nutrition theme: fiber, plant-based proteins, fruits and vegetables, and a balanced plate. We challenge you to take a picture showcasing how your plate reflects each week’s theme. Post your photo on Instagram with the hashtag #BWHealthy each week to be entered for a chance to win the Ultimate Healthy Eating Gift Bag, which includes a week’s supply of fresh vegetables from a local farm!  If you miss a week, don’t worry! You can complete these challenges at any time during the month, so there is always time to catch up.  The more photos you take, the better chance you have to win!

Week 1: Fun with fiber!

Did you know that soluble fiber, found in foods like oatmeal and beans, can help keep you full and can also help lower your blood sugar and cholesterol?

The challenge for week 1 is to post a picture of your fiber-rich meal to Instagram (Add #BWHealthy to be entered to win.)

 

Week 2: The power of plant-based proteins!

Did you know that eating protein provides the building blocks for muscle growth? Plant-based proteins (think beans, tofu, and quinoa!) also have the bonus of fiber minus the saturated fat of meat and dairy. #WinWin

 The challenge for week 2 is to post a picture of a meal containing plant-based protein to Instagram. (Add #BWHealthy to be entered to win)

 

Week 3: Fruits and vegetables: eat the rainbow!

 Did you know that fruits and vegetables contain cancer-fighting antioxidants and immune-building vitamins and minerals? The more colorful fruits and vegetables you eat, the stronger you become!

The challenge for week 3 is to post a picture of your plate filled with colorful fruits and/or vegetables to Instagram. (Add #BWHealthy to be entered to win.)

 

Week 4: Eat a balanced plate!

Did you know that making your plate ½ fruits and vegetables, ¼ grains, and ¼ protein helps you get all the nutrients you need for a healthy life. Now that’s a Balanced Plate!
