Well Newborn Pediatric Care

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) we know that giving birth to a baby is one of the most momentous occasions in life. Happily, the great majority of babies are born healthy. Our BWH Faculty Newborn Service is passionate about supporting parents and their loved ones during those magical and sometimes stressful first days of parenting their new daughters and sons. We are committed to providing the very best care for every baby, understanding that the needs and preferences of each family are unique and important and that the best care is delivered by a well-coordinated multidisciplinary team.

In addition to routine care, the BWH Faculty Newborn Service is also able to provide:

  • Expertise in caring for more fragile “well” babies, such as late preterm newborns and multiples
  • Circumcision service
  • Expertise in newborn behavior and development in collaboration with The Brazelton Institute
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in supporting breastfeeding goals, with two of our pediatricians certified as lactation consultants and the ability to prescribe pasteurized human donor milk from the Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast for those families who prefer this option if their infant requires supplemental nutrition
  • Lingual frenulectomy service (removal of a tight band of tissue—the lingual frenulum—connecting the underside of the tongue with the floor of the mouth)

We are proud of our record of excellence and collaboration in the three aspects of academic medicine: clinical care, teaching, and research:

  • Caring for approximately 80 percent of babies born at BWH, our hospital-based pediatricians have chosen to make newborns and their families the focus of much of their clinical work and have a wealth of knowledge, passion, and experience in this area. Our pediatricians help to develop and implement the clinical practice guidelines that ensure evidence-based consistent medical practice at BWH.
  • Dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians, our pediatricians are teachers as well as clinicians and are joined by students and pediatric trainees from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics in the care of well newborns and their families. These young clinicians help us to stay lifelong learners in our field.
  • As a premier research institution, BWH also offers interested families the option to participate in research studies ranging from the evaluation of tools to measure jaundice to studies on genome sequencing of newborns.

We are honored to be a part of your new baby’s birth story and look forward to the opportunity for our family to care for your family!
