Clinical Psychiatry

Psychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital has a long history of excellence and innovations, going back to 1939 with the work of luminaries such as John Romano and George Engel, and has grown to national and international leadership in the area of hospital-based psychiatry. The department provides the full spectrum of psychiatric services, ranging from Inpatient and Partial (Day) Hospital services to a wide selection of ambulatory areas of excellence. These include Neuropsychiatry, Women's Mental Health, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Psychooncology (at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), Young Adult Psychiatry, HIV Psychiatry, GI Psychiatry, and Trauma-informed Care. We provide unique interventional psychiatric treatment programs including ECT, TMS, and Ketamine treatment.

The Medical Psychiatry services, which are hospital-based and include Consultation-Liaison and Emergency Psychiatry, are a nationally renowned program with one of the largest faculty divisions and largest fellowship program in the United States. We have subspecialties in many areas, including critical care psychiatry, burn/trauma psychiatry, transplant psychiatry, and cardiovascular psychiatry. We have a strong clinical connection to Primary Care as well, with Collaborative Care psychiatrists established in all of our primary care centers. In the community, psychiatry is closely integrated into our two Community Health Centers.

Neuropsychiatry is another major strength of the Brigham. We have a large neuropsychiatry service, which together with geriatric psychiatry, provides integrated care and training with cognitive behavioral neurology and neuropsychology in the Center for Brain Mind Medicine. Subspecialty areas include MS neuropsychiatry, functional neurologic disorders, movement disorders neuropsychiatry, traumatic brain injury neuropsychiatry, dementia/Alzheimer's disease neuropsychiatry, stroke neuropsychiatry and epilepsy neuropsychiatry (part of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center).

Women's Psychiatry similarly has subspecialty areas with a focus on the perinatal period and menopause. Psychooncology is located at the Dana Farber Cancer Center in the Department of Psychooncology and Palliative Care.

The Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital primary site is in the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine at 60 Fenwood Road, which is a hub for state-of-the-art outpatient clinical care, advanced imaging, TMS, and research. Brigham Psychiatric Specialties has a hub at 221 Longwood Ave. Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital is another main site, with a full range of inpatient and outpatient psychiatry and addiction services. Additionally, the department provides services throughout the community at 850 Boylston St. in Chestnut Hill and at other network practice locations.
