The Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA provides a 12-month, full-time psychology internship for doctoral students in clinical psychology. The training program is centered upon the provision of training within a scientist-practitioner model, with a focus on providing clinical care and engaging in scientific endeavors and research activities. Psychology interns will be provided with a broad-based approach to training in clinical psychology with opportunities for specialization through one of two training tracks (General Adult, Neuropsychology), specialty rotations and electives. The Department of Psychiatry at the Brigham is an academic affiliate of Harvard Medical School and interns will have the opportunity to train and collaborate with specialists across multiple disciplines within a world-renowned academic medical center.
The core clinical training consists of two 6-month rotations. Interns each train within rotations that include an Ambulatory Psychology service and Inpatient Psychology service. This core training is supplemented with psychological assessment training within the Psychological Assessment and Research Service (PARSe). Interns choose additional clinical electives, based on interns’ interests and professional goals, which include opportunities for further training in the areas of gender diversity, pain management, serious mental illness, addictions, pediatric newborn medicine, psycho-oncology and neuropsychology.
Psychology interns in the Neuropsychology track will spend 50% of their time training within the Department of Neurology and 50% of their time training within the Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Within the Department of Neurology, interns will see patients through the Center for Brain Mind Medicine (CBMM), which is uniquely collaborative, interdisciplinary group comprising Neuropsychologists, Behavioral Neurologists, Neuropsychiatrists, and Social Workers. Interns will develop competency in the assessment of patients presenting with a range of neurological and neuropsychiatric syndromes. Within the Department of Psychiatry, interns will focus their training within the Psychological Assessment Research Service (PARSe) to develop competency in psychological assessment. Interns will also be provided with training in outpatient care including core clinical activities of individual and group psychotherapy.
All interns in both tracks dedicate time for research activities and are expected to develop a research product at the end of the training year.
As a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital has a commitment to training and education. Interns will be supervised for a minimum of 4 hours per week, will choose a separate non-evaluative mentor to assist in professional development, and will have opportunities to develop their own supervision and teaching skills by supervising doctoral students in clinical psychology and/or neuropsychology. Didactic opportunities include a weekly psychology seminar, case consultation series, clinical teaching rounds, and various other departmental and hospital educational initiatives. Interns are also encouraged to take advantage of numerous learning activities that are available across the Brigham, Harvard Medical School and Longwood Medical Area academic communities.
Intern compensation includes an annual salary of $44,000, vacation time, sick days, paid holidays, and educational leave. Psychology interns on internship are eligible for benefits including health insurance arranged through the hospital. Academic appointments as a Clinical Fellow in Psychology within the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School will be solicited from the institution.
Applicants should complete a minimum of 300 AAPI hours and have a minimum of 3 graduate training years prior to beginning internship. Applicants from APA or CPA-accredited institutions (PhD or PsyD) are encouraged to apply. APPIC applications are due by November 14, 2023 at 11:59 EST.
