Geriatric Psychiatry

The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry serves the needs of older adults with symptoms due to psychiatric conditions, neuropsychiatric disorders and psychosocial challenges in late life.

The Division is led by Dr. Nancy J. Donovan and clinical services are directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Urizar. Our patients and their families benefit from interdisciplinary care provided by specialists in

  • Geriatric neuropsychiatry and dementia care (Drs. Nancy Donovan, Juan Carlos Urizar and Ricardo Salazar),
  • General geriatric psychiatry (Drs. Catherine Gonzalez and Carolina Jimenez-Madiedo),
  • Geriatric psychology (Dr. Abby Altman) and
  • Geriatric social work (Blair Manning-Garrido, LICSW, Caroline Bucholz, LICSW, Jean Ford Figaro, CHW).

The Division is committed to the practice and advancement of evidenced-based treatments across the full range of therapeutic modalities. We collaborate with other psychiatric and mental health specialists within Brigham Psychiatric Services and we work closely with Neuropsychiatry, Neurology, Neuropsychology and Social Work within the Center for Brain Mind Medicine at the Neurosciences Center in the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine.

We have a strong research focus on the neuropsychiatry of aging and early Alzheimer's disease and the relationship of social-emotional function to mental, cognitive and physical health in older adults. We are also leading initiatives to improve health equity and access to care for underserved, older patients. Our division plays an integral role in the education and clinical training of Harvard Medical School students, Brigham and Women's Hospital psychiatry residents and Mass General Brigham Geriatric Psychiatry fellows.
