Abdominal Imaging and Intervention

Welcome to the BWH Radiology's Division of Abdominal Imaging and Intervention. We are comprised of a group of radiologists subspecializing in diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) tracts.

Imaging procedures of the abdomen and pelvis include radiography, GI and GU fluoroscopy (such as barium enema and voiding cystourethrography), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound. The Division’s clinical programs have expanded to include all radiology at all Brigham sites, including Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and several imaging centers in southern Massachusetts. Interventional radiology procedures such as tissue biopsy, fluid aspiration, catheter drainage, and tumor ablation are performed as part of the Cross-Sectional Interventional Radiology (CSIR) Service and guided by ultrasound, CT, MRI, and PET/CT.

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the subspecialty of abdominal radiology includes both imaging and intervention, and is founded and based on an organ-system, disease-focused approach. An organ system organization that includes both imaging and intervention aligns with the broader trends in medicine, and is the best way to care for patients and achieve the goals of the subspecialty of abdominal radiology and radiology in general. As a result the Division is dedicated to researching and developing the latest techniques in all areas of the abdomen. Such advanced radiology techniques include CT using dual energy and low radiation doses, MRI using short protocols and elastography, and advanced interventional techniques such as tumor ablations guided by PET/CT and MRI in the novel, NIH-supported, AMIGO (Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating) Suite.

The Division is actively involved in the research of disorders of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, and the development of new and improved ways CT, MRI, Ultrasound, radiography, and interventional radiology techniques can be used to improve patient care.

As a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, the Division has active programs that contribute to the medical education of medical students, radiology residents, and abdominal imaging and intervention fellows. Other physicians who are interested in learning abdominal radiology can observe in the Division by partaking in Brigham Radiology’s Observership Program.
