Tumor Ablation Program

Welcome to the website for Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Tumor Ablation Program. We offer patients state-of-the art treatments of cancers using minimally invasive treatments that are guided by imaging. The tumor ablation program is a component of the Department of Radiology’s Cross-Sectional Interventional Radiology Service. Like other interventional radiology procedures, we place needle-like therapy probes through the skin into tumors using ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), position emission tomography (PET/CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance.

We offer a full range of ablation-type treatments including those based on heating, such as radiofrequency (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA), freezing (cryoablation), alcohol injection, and irreversible electroporation (IRE).

In 2022, we celebrated our 25^th year of tumor ablation. We have performed over 3000 procedures. Our success stems from a robust clinical practice supported by a foundation of academic interest and achievement in the field of intervention. Our capabilities are always advancing at the forefront with new technical developments in imaging and instrumentation. We are one of a very few programs in the country that possess a full complement of all major ablation modalities.

We offer treatments of tumors and cancers arising from several sites in the body, including the lung, liver, kidney, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, bones/soft tissues, and prostate.
