Qualified medical physicists are professionals who provide clinical services in Diagnostic Medical Physics, MRI Physics and Nuclear Medical Physics. They are typically board certified in one or more Medical Physics Specialties by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and/or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP). These professionals fulfill state, federal and accreditation organizations’ requirements that activities pertaining to the testing, quality control and protocol development relevant to imaging equipment are performed by and/or under the supervision of an appropriately qualified Medical Physicist. The Medical Physics group in the Department of Radiology provides comprehensive Diagnostic and Nuclear Medical Physics services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, BWH Faulkner Hospital and other facilities in the BWH network.

Core clinical services are:

  • Medical physics support for imaging equipment acquisition
  • Acceptance testing of new equipment and annual performance testing of existing imaging equipment (MRI, radiography, fluoroscopy, interventional, mammography, bone densitometry, CT, PET, SPECT, gamma cameras, US etc.)
  • Provision of radiation shielding designs for new construction, and modifications of existing facilities
  • Provision of radiation shielding surveys for new rooms and existing facilities
  • Development and direction of equipment quality assurance and safety programs
  • Provision of medical physics support for accreditations of imaging equipment and facilities by ACR and other accreditation bodies
  • Compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements
  • Characterization of radiation dose for imaging protocols
  • Imaging protocol development, review and dose management
  • Assisting diagnostic medical staff in the safe use of all imaging modalities
  • Radiation dose optimization and provision of patient dose estimates in specific situations
  • Provision of consultation regarding radiation dose / risk for medical imaging procedures
  • Provision of medical physics support for institutional radiation protection and general safety efforts in the use of imaging equipment
  • Advancing new image acquisition and analysis techniques and technologies
  • Providing medical physics education, training and in-service for radiology residents, technologists and other medical practitioners
  • Provision of medical physics support for research projects and performing medical physics research
