The Department of Medicine (DOM) continues to pioneer biomedical research and is among the largest recipients of sponsored funding of any department. The ongoing success of the department is due in large part to the innovation and leadership demonstrated by our scientists who are particularly noteworthy for their contributions in the fields of translational and clinical research involving disease-oriented research, patient-oriented research, and population science.
DOM investigators are driving innovation and discovery, as demonstrated by 68 U.S. patent filings in FY22. Their efforts yielded more than 4,866 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. This level of success is also made possible by departmental and hospital leadership, who provided the support necessary to develop premier research programs. Further, the DOM research enterprise continued its assiduous pursuit of treatment and prevention strategies for COVID-19, submitting 544 research proposals and receiving over $92 million in funding directly related to COVID-19 from FY20-FY22. DOM faculty published 413 manuscripts related to the COVID-19 pandemic in FY22.
The department’s research community consists of more than 500 research faculty and more than 400 research fellows. Our investigators are nationally and internationally recognized for their achievements and are represented in some of medicine’s leading honorific societies, such as:

The department has long been the home of groundbreaking, large-scale research studies, such as the Nurse’s Health Study, the Physician’s Health Study, and the Women’s Health Study, three world-renowned and long-running epidemiological studies.
The DOM occupies research space in 22 buildings spanning the greater Boston area. The physical presence of our department stretches over 431,000 square feet of assignable research space throughout the BWH campus.
