Thoracic Cancer

Surgeons in the Division of Thoracic Surgery are the thoracic surgical team for Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, a unique treatment center that unites specialists from our top-ranked hospital and experts from one of the world’s leading cancer institutes. Working together as one singularly-focused team, we offer and evidence-based cancer treatments that save lives as well as access to innovative technologies and clinical trials.

Our board-certified thoracic surgeons specialize in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma, thymoma, airway malignancies and other cancers within the chest, and are engaged in ongoing medical research—developing approaches and solutions that improve patient outcomes and quality of life. We are dedicated to educating patients about their specific cancer and treatment options so they can make informed decisions. From diagnosis to treatment, our multidisciplinary team of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, physician assistants, nutritionists, social workers and other health care professionals work collaboratively with patients. We stress open communication every step of the way, making the cancer treatment experience as reassuring as possible.

This patient-physician partnership gives patients access to the latest promising therapies, many of which have been pioneered by Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) thoracic surgeons. These include endoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries for thoracic cancers, approaches that allow surgical precision, fewer risks and a quicker recovery. Our goal is to treat and ultimately eliminate thoracic cancers while minimizing the effects of treatment on health and lifestyle.

Our thoracic surgery group consists of board-certified thoracic surgeons and a supportive clinical and administrative staff who work as one cohesive team to provide the best possible care for each patient. This care is specifically tailored to each patient based on their diagnosis (what type of cancer), stage (how advanced), functional status (how well they are from a medical point of view) and wishes. In addition, patients have full access to world-renowned Brigham and Women’s Hospital with an array of experienced specialists in every field and subfield of medicine. Thoracic surgery services are available at Brigham and Women’s Hospital main campus at Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford and in Weymouth at Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital.
