General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is used to put you into a deep sleep during an operation or procedure, so that you do not feel any pain. It involves administering medication through a needle in your vein and/or medication that you breathe in through a special mask.

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we have a highly specialized team of anesthesiologists who specialize in various types of general anesthesiology procedures. The goal is to make you as safe and comfortable as possible before, during and after your procedure.

You can be assured of having an individualized anesthesia plan tailored to your concerns and specific needs, in order to provide the best possible outcome.

Safe and Effective Care

General anesthesia today is safer and more effective than ever before. Our anesthesiologists monitor you very closely while you are asleep, checking your vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate. Recovery from general anesthesia also is faster and easier than in the past. Side effects and risks are minimal.

Our role in your care continues beyond your operation or procedure. Our anesthesiologists are available during your entire hospitalization to help manage any pain and discomfort you may experience after your surgery. Learn more about our pain management services.
