Infectious Disease Pathology

The Infectious Disease Pathology Service of the Division of Surgical Pathology provides comprehensive diagnostic expertise and services relating to the pathology of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections of all tissues and organ systems. In addition to evaluation by conventional histology, a variety of specialized immunohistochemical and molecular tests are utilized. In close collaboration with the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and Division of Infectious Diseases, laboratory results and clinical findings are incorporated to arrive at an integrated diagnosis for each case.

The Service provides expert diagnostic interpretation of in-house cases for Brigham and Women’s Hospital and has an active consultation practice. Educational activities include daily teaching of students, residents, and fellows. Research interests of the faculty include development of novel techniques for diagnosis of infections from anatomic pathology specimens and characterization of unusual and emerging infectious organisms.
